• Norwegian Fjords

Where and when do they sail?

Norway, part of wider Scandinavia in northern Europe, sits just to the north of the UK and as a result is within easy cruising distance from the UK. Norway has a massive coastline, ranging from Stavanger and the surrounding area in the south all the way up to Tromso and beyond in the north. All along the coastline, Norway has over a thousand fjords - deep, narrow inlets that can stretch inland for miles and make for some amazing scenery. Cruises vary quite widely in terms of price and itinerary but the more common week long cruises tend to focus on the south-west corner of Norway and the Fjords in this region, which are easier to reach from southern Europe and in particular the UK.

Most cruise lines offer some form of Norwegian Fjords cruise, either alone, or as part of a longer trip up to Scandinavia, and these generally operate over the warmer half of the year, generally April – October, avoiding the very cold winter months. Typically these cruises will focus on the area between Stavanger and Alesund with 3-4 port days and a couple of days at sea. We’ve included some of our vlogs from our Fjords cruise below, plus port guides to some of the more popular stops.

Why choose a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords?

The fjords are among the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the world, consisting of narrow inlets, cliffs, waterfalls and snow-capped mountains. As well as the amazing scenery passengers can enjoy fun activities like hiking, kayaking, fishing, diving as well as sightseeing in the Norwegian towns and cities, taking in some Norwegian culture. Therefore there’s something for everyone here and you’re almost guarantee a fun holiday. Plus cruises to the Norwegian Fjords also regularly sail from the UK meaning you can save on those expensive flight costs.

What’s our top tip?

Book your excursions early. A lot of the stops on a Fjords cruise are small cities and towns with only limited tour operators. As a result the more popular excursions can often book up months and months in advance. Therefore do your planning early if you think you’ll want to enjoy something in particular.
