• Haugesund

Haugesund, is a coastal town right on the edge of the fjords and as a result is known as another gateway to the fjords. It has a wonderful maritime history and is known for its close ties to the Viking era—celebrated each year with the International Viking Festival. It also has connections to the Norwegian film industry. While the town has a more industrial feel compared to fjord villages like Olden or Hellesylt, you can still enjoy the nice waterfront and town centre and can get out of town to enjoy some fun activities.

Generally the cruise ports in the Norwegian Fjords are relatively small so we found there wasn’t a massive selection of excursions available. Despite this each cruise line will offer a range of excursions you can book, or alternatively you can book independently. We always check Viator (https://www.viator.com/?pid=P00106682&mcid=42383&medium=link) and Get Your Guide (https://gyg.me/YWHfVHma) to compare options and prices before we book.

We’ve shown below a selection of the top sights and excursions you can enjoy during your day in Haugesund, and we’ve included a link to our vlog covering the destination.

Our Top Things to Do

  • Haraldsgata

Haraldsgata is the main street in Haugesund and Norway’s longest pedestrian street. It’s a lovely place to wander and shop. Don’t miss the sweet shop called Haugesund Godteland, located on the lovely little Steinparken which is a very nice little flower filled square halfway down the street.

  • Marilyn Monroe Statue

Marilyn Monroe’s father is said to have hailed from the region around Haugesund. In tribute to the iconic film star they’ve placed a statue of her down by the waterfront. It’s maybe not the most flattering but is a fun, quirky little sight to take in.

  • Viking Planet

Viking Planet is a digital museum in the middle of Haugesund. It focuses on the Vikings and tells the story of local Viking history. It sounds very interesting but we heard is quite quick so do your research beforehand.

  • Langfoss Waterfall

Langfoss Waterfall, Norway’s 5th highest waterfall is around an hour and a half from Haugesund - day trip territory. It looks well worth the effort though so pick an excursion to pay it a visit.

  • Viking Village

The Viking Village is a reconstructed Viking Farm located around 15 minutes away from the city. Here you can step back in time and experience Viking life through guided tours and demonstrations. A really fun family day out.

  • RIB Boat

RIB boats are a really fun way to get around. You zip around all the coastal waterways and try and spot some of the local wildlife while taking in the wonderful scenery.

  • Bus or city tour

Enjoy an open top bus tour to take in the lovely city or book one of the many walking tours that are on offer. Or if you want something between try a segway or bike tour.

  • Fishing

All of the ports in Norway are good spots to fish and all offer some form of excursion out on the water. Haugesund has it’s own options so if you fancy catching something trawl through the options and pick your own.

  • Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Kayaking and paddleboarding are really popular pastimes in the fjords and there are different excursions and tour operators you can book through. These look a really peaceful and fun way to take in the scenery.
