Nassau, the vibrant capital of the Bahamas, is a premier cruise port destination, and a staple stop for any Bahamas cruise. It has a mixed reputation, partly due to how busy it can be but if you skip past this you’ll find stunning beaches, rich history, and lively culture. Complete with crystal-clear turquoise waters and pristine white sand beaches, it’s an ideal spot for beach time and water sports, particularly on famous Paradise Island. Alternatively if you want to explore a little further afield, the island boasts a blend of colorful colonial architecture and modern amenities, with a range of historical landmarks such as the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle. If shopping is more your thing then try the bustling town and Straw Market to shop for local crafts and souvenirs. With its warm hospitality and an array of dining options that showcase the flavors of Bahamian cuisine, Nassau promises an unforgettable experience and a wonderful stop on any cruise.
The island itself is relatively small and you can drive from the cruise port to the other end of the island in just over 30 minutes, meaning it’s very easy to explore.
We generally think of Nassau as being split into three areas;
Paradise Island, with it’s amazing beaches and resorts.
Nassau, the city itself and where the cruise ships all dock, with some brilliant sights to see, shopping and dining.
Nassau island, the rest of the island outside of the city with a smattering of sights/attractions and more beaches and resorts to enjoy.
Most visitors, particularly those visiting for the day on cruise ships, tend to focus on either Paradise Island or the City given their proximity to the port. Each cruise line will offer a range of excursions you can book, or alternatively you can book independently. We always check Viator (https://www.viator.com/?pid=P00106682&mcid=42383&medium=link) and Get Your Guide (https://gyg.me/YWHfVHma) to compare options and prices before we book. We’ve shown below a selection of the top sights and excursions you can enjoy during your day in Nassau, and we’ve included a link to our vlog covering the destination.
Our Top Things to Do
-
Beaches
Keep it simple and enjoy some amazing beach time. Whether that’s Cabbage beach out on Paradise Island, Cable Beach further afield, or Junkanoo Beach just a few minutes walk from the port, you’re guaranteed to be able to find a nice spot of sand to spend the day on.
-
Atlantis Resort
The world famous Atlantis resort is located on Paradise Island. You can pop over and explore yourself or book a day pass to access the Aquaventure waterpark. You can even add on Dolphin swims although these all come with a hefty price tag.
-
Shopping
If you want to do a bit of shopping there are several options on Nassau. You can hop over to Paradise Island and explore the Atlantis Resort, or you can stay closer to the port and explore Nassau itself. Either wander Bay street to see what souvenirs you can pick up, or stop by the Straw Market to haggle a little.
-
Pirates of Nassau Museum
A fun little family friendly museum focussing in on Nassau’s history with pirates. Again, very easy to walk from the port and only needs an hour really. This museum includes a fun replica pirate ship to walk around and some cool exhibits on pirates and pirate life.
-
Fort Fincastle
Fort Fincastle, another significant historical site in Nassau, sits atop a hill overlooking the whole island. As a result the views from here are stunning. It was designed to protect the island from invaders, and is now an impressive historical sight that’s just a 15 minute walk from the port.
-
Queens Staircase
One of the main local landmarks, the Queen's Staircase, is a stone staircase carved out of solid limestone. It was named to honor Queen Victoria's and is another reminder of the island’s colonial past. The lush greenery surrounding the staircase adds to the atmosphere and is one of the main historical sights on the island.
-
Horse Drawn Surrey Rides
If you’d like to see the city but prefer not to walk, one option is to take a surrey ride. These offer tours of downtown and leave from near the port. They generally last 20-25 minutes and seat 3 per carriage.
-
Wandering Dowtown
Nassau is very walkable and you can take in the sights just spending an hour or two on foot. Whether that’s taking in the atmosphere on Bay Street, Parliament Square or Pompey Square, or stopping by Government House, Nassau is an interesting city to wander, just minutes from the port.
-
Fort Charlotte
Fort Charlotte, built in the late 18th century, is a remnant of Nassau's colonial history. The fortification located just outside the city offers panoramic views back to the harbor and city. Explore underground passages, dungeons and cannons, making this one of the top historical sights on the island.
-
Blue Lagoon
There are a couple of smaller islands just off of Nassau - one of which is Blue Lagoon and there are various different excursions you can take here which include animal encounters (dolphins or sealions) and water sports. Alternatively just take it easy with a beach day. Either way it’s a great way to spend a day in the Bahamas.
-
Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation Centre
A small wildlife centre featuring macaws, peacocks, snakes, turtles and flamingos. Located outside of the city, excursions take you here to enjoy the wildlife and gardens for the day.
-
Catamaran Cruises and Diving/Snorkelling
As with any tropical destination there are numerous excursions on offer enabling you to get out on the water in a catamaran or to snorkel on the beautiful coral reefs in the surrounding area. If you want to take it a step further book a trip scuba diving to enjoy the amazing sea life.
-
Seaworld Explorer Semi-Submarine
A very popular option with families, this ‘submarine’ lets you enjoy the nearby reefs and marine life without getting wet. This is actually a boat but has a deep hull with viewing windows. We’ve often seen this sold out so make sure to be quick.
-
Pirate Ship Adventure
Set sail aboard a replica pirate ship and enjoy acted out tales and stories from the ‘pirate’ crew. Another great option for families while also showing off a bit of the island itself.
-
James Bond Tours
With the island having been used for several James Bond films, you can book a tour showing off some of the filming locations as well as more general local sights. Perhaps one for more hard-core Bond fans, but also a fun way to see the sights.
